What Are The Finite Verbs?

Sometimes we need to describe an event by using two verbs in the same sentence, in this case, the verb is finite by taking ing, and Verbs such as admit, anticipate, appreciate, attempt, avoid are examples of ing suffixes.

She avoided coming side by side with me at the ball.
I saw her stealing at the market. (There are actually two verbs here, but it became finite by adding ing to the verb steal.
)

When the verbs love, like, prefer, hate are used alone in the sentence, the other verb is suffixed ing.

I hate doing
I like traveling with my friends.
I prefer watching tv for homework.
I am in love with reading a book.

Some verbs are classified as either finite or infinitive depending on their meaning.

Stop

If the meaning of the verb ‘stop’ in the sentence is to leave or give up, it takes ing.

I stop smoking because it is harmful.

Go on

If ‘go on’ means to complete something unfinished in the sentence, another verb takes the suffixing.

They went on doing this project because time was running out. (They continued to do the project.)

Remember

If ‘remember’ means to recall in the sentence, it is a finite verb and it takes the suffixing.

I remember playing snowballs outside with my friends last year.
I remember crying all the time when I was little.

Forget

We use the finite verb in a sentence to tell that we forgot something we did before.

I forgot to tell her there is no school tomorrow. (Here the suffixing does not come to the verb because it has not already said it, so the action has not been performed)
I have forgotten reading this book and bought it again. (She or he read the book but forgot)
