Uses Whereas, Although, Either … or, But, Definiton and Example Sentences

Although

Although means “in spite of something”. It  can be used at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence, but it doesn’t have a comma afterwards.

Examples

• Although he is rich, he has no girl friend.
• Although studying French seems difficult, it’s simpler than you think.
• Although they have a lot of money, they’re still not happy.

 

Either … or

We use either … or for connect things which are the same types, phrases, clauses or words.

Examples

• You can either call me at home or the office.
• He can have either tea or coffee.
• Mary didn’t like either Madrid or Texas.
• I’ll either write to you or phone you next week.

 

But

But is one of the seven coordinating conjunctions in English. But is used to join two ideas that are opposites.

Examples

• I am very hungry, but the fridge is empty.
• I love dogs, but I hate cats.
• I want to call his, but I don’t have his phone number.
• George is very clever but he doesn’t study his lessons .

 

Whereas

Whereas links two ideas that contrast with each other. It is a conjunction. It is used to highlight an important difference between two similar things or facts.

Examples

• Whereas we did all the job, they enjoyed themselves.
• He is careful, whereas I take risks.
• Whereas you help him, he doesn’t help anyone.
