One of the most used roles of the language in regular conversations is a comparison or to express the extremes. We mention the status that our new job is better than the old one. Or a food made by your friend could be the most delicious Crème Brule ever. In those cases, you use comparative and superlative adjectives. But how?

The comparative form of an adjective

In English, adjectives can be used to make comparisons. How do you use an adjective for a comparison? There are two methods to do that. If the word has less than 2 syllables, you add “er” to the end of the word. What if the word has more than 1 syllable? In that case, you add “more” or “less” before the word. At the end of the day, you use the following formula to make a comparison.

“Subject + Verb + Adjective-er + Than + The Compared Thing” or

“Subject + Verb + More/Less + Adjective + Than + The Compared Thing”

The superlative form of an adjective

In English, another function of an adjective is to express extreme situations. In these situations, you use superlative adjectives. How do you use the superlative form of an adjective? The main logic is pretty like comparative form. If the word has less than 2 syllables you add “est” to the end of the word. What about the words that have more than 1 syllable? In this kind of word, you add “most” before the adjective. If we make up a formula for this usage it should be like the following lines.

“Subject + Verb + The + Adjective-est” or

“Subject + Verb + The + Most + Adjective”.

You are the most beautiful girl I’ve ever met.
